What is the Antikythera Mechanism?

The Antikythera Mechanism is a cultural treasure - and for several decades a great mystery - that has engrossed scholars across many disciplines. It is considered the ‘world’s first computer’ -  a mechanical device of bronze gears which used ground-breaking technology to make astronomical predictions, by mechanising astronomical cycles and theories. It was discovered in 1901 in an ancient shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera.

Each awarded team will win a bronze-and wood replica of this beautiful, monumentally important device - an object which represents the opening chapter of a book which the Shifts participants are continuing to write.

We thank DeepSea for sponsoring the prizes!
